It may be counterintuitive to think that moving your body can actually energize you rather than deplete you. The ancient cultures had it right. Dance movements for religious, spiritual or ceremonial purposes were typical practices. Exercise then, was less intentional and was really just a way of life. In fact, a lifestyle of movement is still key to people currently living in, what’s known as, the Blue Zones—pockets of societies around the world where people have been discovered to have greater longevity.
According to Health Line, “In the Blue Zones, people don’t exercise purposefully by going to the gym. Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky ,a genetic metabolic neurologist at McMaster University, further explains that all exercise falls into two categories important for holistic health: aerobic, and strength training. Aerobic movements causes an acceleration of the heart as well as breathing, which forces oxygen into the tissues and the rest of the body. On the other hand, he explains that only 20% of Americans do strength training, which builds your bones and muscles either by using weights or using just your body as resistance. Aside from weight-lifting, practices like yoga, tai chi and Pilates are also excellent forms of strength training. According to Anthony Hackney, an exercise physiologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, “People always get the image of the big, muscular guy,” Hackney says. “We try to think of muscle strength and power as a 65-year-old lady picking up a gallon of milk, pouring a glass and feeling comfortable.”
Speaking of lower-intensity exercises like yoga, it has also been shown to have potential benefits when it comes to mood. Research according to Everyday Health suggests yoga may help reduce depression and anxiety. A study published in the September 2016 Journal of Depression and Anxiety found that six weeks of yoga, in addition to, standard treatment for depression, reduced depressive symptoms.
Dr. Eva Cwynar, an internal medicine practitioner adds fodder, believing that yoga and tai chi are stress relievers through breathing and stretching. She states, “The practice of yoga helps people to restore their levels of energy, to enhance stamina, relieve anxiety, and reduce fatigue.
