A CURE FOR ALZHEIMER’S?

Steve Newport’s Alzheimer’s has slowed, and even reversed, thanks to an unlikely treatment prescribed by his wife. Dr. Mary Newport is a physician who runs a neonatology ward at a hospital in Tampa, Florida. When the Newports received the news that Steve suffered from Alzheimer’s, the doctor had to inform them that Steve was well past the beginning stages of the disease, and was on the verge of Alzheimer’s. Mary began researching the disease, and saw that it appeared to be a type of diabetes of the brain. Much like Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s patients begin to have trouble processing insulin. In the case of Alzheimer’s, these problems prevent brain cells from accepting glucose, their primary fuel. Without glucose, the brain cells eventually die. However, brain cells accept an alternate fuel – ketones, which are metabolized in the liver after you eat medium-chain triglycerides, found in coconut oil. Mary began incorporating coconut oil into Steve’s diet, and within 3 weeks saw dramatic improvement. His cognitive abilities have continued to improve, as have his mood and physical capabilities.

Scientists around the world have been working on developing medications that utilize ketones. Dr. Kieran Clarke of Oxford University has developed a ketone ester that is 10 times more effective than coconut oil. The ester, however, is difficult and expensive to manufacture. The research team will require significant funding before being able to make the ketone ester available to the mass market.

Meanwhile, coconut oil is widely and cheaply available. For years, coconut oil has battled a stigma placed upon in in the late 1960s. At the time, not much was understood about cholesterol, but coconut oil was known to raise it. What was not know was that coconut oil raises HDL, the type of cholesterol that improves your health. Its association with cholesterol has tainted people’s perception of the oil, though the new research is beginning to change that. Coconut oil has not only been shown to improve Alzheimer’s patients, but also those suffering from Parkinson’s and ALS. If you incorporate coconut oil into your diet, be sure to purchase 100% pure coconut oil, and nothing containing hydrogenated oils.
