Everyone knows that the key to maintaining a healthy weight is to eat healthy foods and exercise regularly. But metabolism also plays an important role, one that is too often ignored. As we age, our metabolism can slow down, resulting in weight gain. But don’t panic! Below are a handful of simple ways to boost your metabolism and burn more calories throughout the day.

Drink More Water

A study presented at the American Chemical Society’s national conference showed that participants who drank two glasses of water before each meal lost an average of 15 pounds over the course of three months. Just by drinking water! Water keeps you feeling energized, so be sure to also drink plenty throughout the day. The more you listen to your body, the better you’ll feel!

Try Out Whey Protein

Smoothies for breakfast are all well and good, but unless you’re making them with peanut butter you’re probably not getting a lot of protein in there. That’s where whey protein comes in – a spoonful of that powder can increase calorie burn and fat utilization, and help your body to maintain muscle. Plus, whey is more effective than soy or casein proteins, so what are you waiting for?

Spice It Up

Instead of reaching for the salt to brighten up a dull meal, reach for the Sriracha instead. Capsaicin, found in chili peppers, acts as a thermogenic and can cause the body to burn up to 90 additional calories after a meal. Plus, delicious!

Don’t Forget to Snack

The problem with the three large meals Americans tend to consume is that they lead to energy crashes throughout the day. Avoid that, and bring snacks to work. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the best combination is produce and protein – so stock up on the cottage cheese and carrot sticks, and keep your metabolism going strong!

I hope that helps! For more great tips on boosting your metabolism, read Linda Melone’s article at The Huffington Post.
